STATS shows 1,784 active rigs as of October 19, 2012, down -7 rigs from a week ago. Oil rigs decreased by -18 (ht: -28, vt-dir: +10.) and total gas rigs increased by +9 (ht: +14, vt-dir: -5). Horizontal oil rigs decreased by -13 in Eagle Ford (TX) and -10 in “Other” region. Vertical/Directional oil rigs increased by +12 in “Other” region to 245, the highest in history. Horizontal gas rigs increased by +17 in Eagle Ford (TX) to 48 and +2 in Haynesville (TX) to 20.

Horizontal oil rigs increased by +11 in “Other” region; eight of which came from Texas in areas outside the established shale plays. Vertical/directional oil rigs increased by +15 in Permian (TX).
