STATS shows 1,830 active rigs as of September 14, 2012, up +27 rig from a week ago. Oil rigs went up by +23 (ht: +8, vt-dir: +15) and total gas rigs went up by +4 (ht: -2, vt-dir: +6). Horizontal oil rigs went up by +5 in Eagle Ford (TX) and by +4 in Anadarko (OK) and Bakken (ND), while going down by -3 in Anadarko (KS) and -2 in Permian (TX). Vertical/Directional oil rigs went up by +6 in “Other” Texas. Horizontal gas rigs went down by -6 in Eagle Ford (TX), followed by -3 in Granite Wash (.....

We focus on net length of non-commercial traders as well as net length of money managers and swap dealers as indicated in the disaggregated data for WTI , natural gas, gasoline, and heating oil. Baker Hughes shows 1,861 active rigs as of September 7, 2012, down -31 from a week ago. Oil rigs went down by -10 (ht: -6, vt-dir: -4) and total gas rigs went down by -21 (ht: -9, vt-dir: -12). Horizontal oil rigs went down by -4 in Anadarko (OK) and -2 in Permian (TX), while going up by +3 in Eagle Ford (TX) and Permian (NM). Horizontal oil rigs went down by -6 in Bakken (ND), followed by -4 in Permian (TX) and by -3 in Eagle Ford (TX). They went up in “other” areas driven by gains in Texas (+2) and Louisiana (+2). EIA reported a +28 bcf injection for the week ended August 31 (Bloomberg median +33 bcf, Bloomberg Whisper +29 bcf). The 25 estimates submitted to Bloomberg varied from +24 bcf to +50 bcf with a standard deviation of 6 bcf. Our model showed +26 bcf. Nationwide cooling degree days reported by NOAA increased to 70 CDDs from 56 CDDs the prior week. Nationwide HDDs dropped from 5 HDDs to 1 HDD the prior week. The 24 estimates submitted to Bloomberg varied from +53 bcf to +74 bcf with a standard deviation of 4 bcf. Our model showed +67 bcf. Nationwide cooling degree days reported by NOAA decreased to 56 CDDs from 74 CDDs the prior week.
