Commitments of Traders Report – December 16, 2013

Please find attached data and charts detailing the latest CFTC Commitments of Traders Report for the week ended December 10. We provide all Legacy and Disaggregated trader positions for natural gas, WTI , Brent, gasoline and heating oil. Non-commercials increased net length in natural gas, WTI , gasoline and heating oil, but decreased in Brent during the reference week. Non-commercials increased net length in natural gas by +101.5 to +258.1k in futures and by +128.9 to +379.0k in futures a.....

Baker Hughes shows 1,780 active rigs as of December 13, 2013, higher by +8 from the previous week. Oil rigs increased by +14 to 1,411(ht: +7; vt-dir: +7) while gas-directed rigs decreased by -6 to 369 (ht: +1; vt-dir: -7). Horizontal oil rigs increased by +8 to 156 in the Bakken (ND) but fell by -3 to 90 in the Anadarko (OK). Gas-directed horizontal rigs increased by +2 to 21 in the Marcellus ( SWPA ).

Propane: US propane inventories fell by -1.7m bbl to 52.6m bbl for the week ended December 6, 2013, which is -10.6m bbl below the five-year average. PADD 3 inventories increased for the first time in 12 weeks, adding a scant +100k bbl to stand at 28.3m bbl. PADD 2 stocks drew -1.5m bbl to 17m bbl reflecting heightened demand for the heating fuel, similar to PADD 1, where stocks declined by -189k bbl to 4.5m bbl. Implied demand decreased -7% to 1.56 mb/d; imports increased by +6% to 133 k.....

U.S. crude oil inventories declined by -10585k bbl in the week ended December 06, while Cushing stocks increased by +625k bbl. Distillate inventories grew by +4541k bbl and gasoline inventories rose by +6717k bbl. *Expanded Coverage* of the Commitments of Traders Report – December 9, 2013

We are expanding our total market natural gas coverage by adding two new contracts: NYMEX Natural Gas Last Day Financial and ICE Natural Gas Penultimate. The ICE Natural Gas Penultimate contract was converted from an OTC swap to a futures contract in November 2012, however, despite its size, the CFTC began reporting data for this contract on May 7, 2013. Upon our inquiry, the CFTC responded that the Commission “had the confidence in the data to report it” on that date. Please f.....

Baker Hughes shows 1,772 active rigs as of December 6, 2013, higher by +14 from the previous week. Oil rigs increased by +6 to 1,397 (ht: +6; vt-dir: unch.), while gas-directed rigs increased by +8 to 375 (ht: +5; vt-dir: +3). Horizontal oil rigs increased by +3 to 93 in Anadarko (OK) and by +2 in Permian (NM), but decreased by -2 to 182 in Eagle Ford (TX). Gas-directed horizontal rigs increased by +3 to 16 in Eagle Ford (TX) and by +2 to 21 in Haynesville (TX).

Propane: US propane inventories fell by -2.7m bbl to 54.3m bbl for the week ended November 29, 2013, which is -9.8m bbl below the five-year average. PADD 3 inventories fell to their lowest levels since the end of May, and currently stand at 28.2m bbl. PADD 2 stocks drew -0.4m bbl while PADD 1 stocks posted a small gain. Implied demand increased +10.4% to 1.68 mb/d; imports were down by -6.0% to 126 kb/d and production was slightly lower at 1.46 mb/d last week.

U.S. crude oil inventories fell by -5585k bbl in the week ended November 29, while Cushing stocks decreased by -18k bbl. Distillate inventories rose by +2649k bbl and gasoline inventories grew by +1828k bbl.
