As we noted last week, the annual rebalancing of the S&P GSCI and Dow Jones- UBS Commodity indexes occurred from January 9 to 13. The rebalancing is reflected in last week’s (January 13) and today’s report. STATS shows 1,868 active rigs as of January 20, 2012, up +25 rigs from a week ago. Oil rigs fell by -6 (ht: -9, vt-dir: +3) and total gas rigs rose by +31 (ht: +15, vt-dir: +16). The increase in horizontal rigs was lead by Eagle Ford (+4) and Marcellus SW (+3), while Haynesville in LA saw the biggest drop by -3 rigs. The increase in the vertical/directional rigs was led by Louisiana (+15) with a concentration in the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale area (+7) and Cameron Parish (+4) located in the Sou.....

U.S. crude oil inventories declined by -3,438k bbl in the week ending January 13, while Cushing stocks drew -832k bbl. Distillate inventories increased by +438k bbl and gasoline inventories posted a gain of +3,717k bbl.

Schlumberger (Smith) Rigs
STATS shows 1,843 active rigs as of January 13, 2012, down -6 rigs from a week ago. Oil rigs rose by +7 (ht: -1, vt-dir: +8) and total gas rigs dropped by -13 (ht: -4, vt-dir: -9). Eagle Ford Gas rigs dropped by -6 and Oil rigs rose by +7, which would imply re-classification.

Please keep in mind that the annual rebalancing of the S&P GSCI and Dow Jones- UBS Commodity indexes will take place from January 9 to 13, and should be reflected in the CFTC data for January 10 and 17 (and in the reports dated January 13 and 20). Twenty percent of the rebalancing size is adjusted each day using the closing price of the futures contract on that day.
