Commitments of Traders Report – April 07, 2014
Please find attached data and charts detailing the latest CFTC Commitments of Traders Report for the week ended April 01. We provide all Legacy and Disaggregated trader positions for natural gas, WTI , Brent, gasoline and heating oil. Non-commercials increased net length in Brent and WTI , but decreased in natural gas, heating oil and gasoline during the reference week. Non-commercials net length in natural gas rose by +8.0k to +400.3k in futures and fell by -13.0k to +501.4k in futur.....

Baker Hughes shows 1,814 active rigs as of April 4, 2014, higher by +9 from the previous week. Oil rigs increased by +11 to 1,498 (ht: +13; vt-dir: -2) while gas-directed rigs decreased by -2 to 316 (ht: 0; vt-dir: -2). Horizontal oil rigs increased by +4 to 40 in Anadarko (TX). Gas-directed horizontal rigs decreased by -3 to 8 in Eagle Ford (TX).

In Focus: monthly EIA stat highlights Although U.S. NGL production for January 2014 was below the record set last September, as gas and oil production recovers from freeze-offs and as construction/expansion projects are completed in the Bakken and Marcellus/Utica, we would expect production to have topped 2.7 mb/d in February or March, and expect to surpass the 3.0 mb/d mark before the end of 1Q15.

U.S. crude oil inventories decreased by -2379k bbl in the week ended March 28, while Cushing stocks fell by -1223k bbl. Distillate inventories rose by +554k bbl and gasoline inventories decreased by -1574k bbl. We provide all Legacy and Disaggregated trader positions for natural gas, WTI , Brent, gasoline and heating oil. Non-commercials increased net length in heating oil , but decreased in natural gas, Brent, gasoline and WTI during the reference week. Non-commercials net length in natural gas decreased by -6.8k to +392.4k in futures and declined by -1.3k to +514.4k in .....

Baker Hughes shows 1,805 active rigs as of March 28, 2014, higher by +6 from the previous week. Oil rigs increased by +14 to 1,487 (ht: +12; vt-dir: +2) while gas-directed rigs decreased by -8 to 318 (ht: -7; vt-dir: -1). Horizontal oil rigs increased by +8 to 189 in the Eagle Ford (TX) and vertical/directional oil rigs increased by +4 to 33 in the Eagle Ford (TX). Gas-directed horizontal rigs decreased by -4 to 18 in Marcellus ( NEPA ).

In Focus: Persistent weakness Although the spike in propane prices and relative strength in butane in January lent support to the NGL fractionation spread, shocks in the NG cash market and NGL market fundamentals quickly dispelled the hope of stronger earnings for producers. Although we argued for the possibility of some volatility in ethane this year should supply/demand factors align accordingly, 2014 is looking a lot like 2013 so far.
