Commitments of Traders Report – January 6, 2014

Non-commercials increased net length in Brent and gasoline, but decreased in natural gas and WTI during the reference week. Non-commercials decreased net length in natural gas by -13.4 to +364.6k in futures and by -17.3 to +496.6k in futures and options. The price of the front month natural gas contract was down by -4.2% to $4.23 on December 31. Non-commercial traders entered long and short positions in NYMEX futures, but exited long positions in NYMEX swaps and short positions in NYMEX.....

Propane: US propane inventories fell by -1.5m bbl to 45.9m bbl for the week ended December 27, 2013, which is -11.2m bbl below the five-year average. PADD 3 inventories fell by -2.1%, or -836k bbl, to 25.3m bbl. PADD 2 stocks fell -5.8%, or -877k bbl, to 14.3m bbl, and in PADD 1, stocks increased by +17k bbl to stand at 3.9m bbl. Implied demand decreased -9% to 1.41 mb/d; imports declined by -10% to 105 kb/d and production increased +1% to 1.45 mb/d last week.

Baker Hughes shows 1,750 active rigs as of January 3, 2014, lower by -6 from the previous week. Oil rigs decreased by -4 to 1,378 (ht: +2; vt-dir: -6) and gas-directed rigs decreased by -2 to 372 (ht: 0; vt-dir: -2). Vertical oil rigs increased by +2 to 41 in Anadarko (TX), while horizontal gas-directed rigs increased by +2 to 23 Haynesville (TX).

U.S. crude oil inventories fell by -7007k bbl in the week ended December 27, while Cushing stocks decreased by -552k bbl. Distillate inventories rose by +5042k bbl and gasoline inventories grew by +844k bbl. Baker Hughes shows 1,756 active rigs as of December 27, 2013, lower by -11 from the previous week. Oil rigs decreased by -13 to 1,382 (ht: +3; vt-dir: -16) while gas-directed rigs increased by +2 to 374 (ht: +3; vt-dir: -1). Vertical oil rigs decreased by -9 to 208 in the Permian (TX), while horizontal gas-directed rigs increased by +1 to 23 in the Marcellus ( SWPA ).
