STATS shows 1,786 active rigs as of August 19, 2011 compared to 1,800 a week ago. Oil rigs were down by -10, (ht: -5, vt-dir: -5), and gas rigs were down by -4 (ht: -6, vt-dir: +2). Statistical summary is attached.
