EIA reported a +83 bcf natural gas inventory build for the week ended May 27. This build was well below consensus estimates (Bloomberg median +94 bcf and Bloomberg Whisper of +90 bcf) and fell below both the prior 5-year average (+99 bcf) and year-ago builds (+90 bcf). With the NYMEX front month contract jumping nearly +$0.15 to $4.85 after the data release (it has since come back down to the mid-$4.70s), the market was certainly surprised by the smaller-than-expected build. This build was larger than consensus estimates (Bloomberg median +67 bcf and Bloomberg Whisper of +64 bcf), but still smaller than the prior 5-year average (+78 bcf) and the year-ago build (+83 bcf). This week’s injection implies a large loosening of balances on the week, but balances actually appear in line with the same calendar week last year (and possibly still tighter). This build was smaller than consensus estimates (Bloomberg median +38 bcf), the prior 5-year average (+65 bcf) and the year-ago build (+81). This week’s injection once again implies tighter balances on both the week and the year (after adjusting for weather). This was a slightly smaller injection than consensus estimates (Bloomberg median +52 bcf and the Bloomberg whisper of +52 bcf). The 5-year average storage injection for the calendar week is +34 bcf but last year there was a +75 bcf injection for the calendar week. This was a notably smaller injection than consensus estimates (Bloomberg median +35 bcf and the Bloomberg whisper of +38 bcf). This was a notably smaller withdrawal than consensus estimates (Bloomberg median -52 bcf and the Bloomberg whisper of -56 bcf).
