STATS shows 1,640 active rigs as of January 4, 2013, lower by -9 for the week. Oil rigs fell by -3 to 1,264 (ht: -7; vt-dir: +4) and gas rigs declined by -6 to 376 (ht: -6; vt-dir: unchanged). Horizontal oil rigs in the Texas portion of the Anadarko Basin fell by -4 to 17 while horizontal gas rigs in the Eagle Ford declined by -5 to 37. Baker Hughes shows 1,757 active rigs as of January 4, 2013, which is unchanged from the previous week. Oil rigs increased by +5 to 1,323 (ht: +11; vt-dir: -6).....

EIA reported a -201 bcf withdrawal for the week ending January 4 (Bloomberg median -191 bcf, Bloomberg Whisper -193). The 26 estimates submitted to Bloomberg varied from -205 bcf to -174 bcf with a standard deviation of 7 bcf. Our model showed -192 bcf. Nationwide HDDs increased to 237, up by 26 week on week. The 23 estimates submitted to Bloomberg varied from -165 bcf to -111 bcf with a standard deviation of 11 bcf. Our model showed -129 bcf. Nationwide HDDs increased to 211, up by 51 week on week. Oil rigs decreased by -13 to 1,267 (ht: +10; vt-dir: -23) while gas-directed rigs fell by -10 to 382 (ht: -7; vt-dir: -3). Oil rigs decreased by -40 to 1,280 (ht: -22, vt-dir: -18) and total gas rigs increased by +4 to 392 (ht: +3, vt-dir: +1). STATS shows 1,708 active rigs as of December 21, 2012, up +3 from the previous week. Oil rigs increased by +3 to 1,320 (ht: +13, vt-dir: -10) and total gas rigs were unchanged, although rig types shifted (ht: +6, vt-dir: -6). Horizontal oil rigs increased by +6 in the Eagle Ford (TX) and by +4 in the Permian (TX).
