Please find attached data and charts detailing the latest CFTC Commitments of Traders Report for the week ended May 22. We focus on net length of non-commercial traders as well as net length of money managers and swap dealers as indicated in the disaggregated data for WTI , natural gas, gasoline, and heating oil. Non-commercial net length in WTI rose slightly during the week ended May 22 — a contrast from the last two reports when net length has declines sharply. Non-commercials expanded .....

Baker Hughes shows 1,977 active rigs as of May 25, 2012, down -5 from a week ago. Oil rigs went up by +1 (ht: +3, vt-dir: -2) and total gas rigs went down by -6 (ht: -5, vt-dir: -1). Horizontal oil rigs went down by -5 in Eagle Ford (TX), followed by -3 in Anadarko (OK) and -2 in Barnett Combo (TX), while going up by +2 in Bakken (ND). STATS shows 1,861 active rigs as of May 25, 2012, down -11 rigs from a week ago. Oil rigs went up by +1 (ht: +4, vt-dir: -3) and total gas rigs went down by -12 (ht: -6, vt-dir: -6). Horizontal oil rigs went up by +5 in Anadarko (OK) and by +4 in Permian (TX), while going down by -9 in Eagle Ford (TX). Vertical/Directional oil rigs went down by -7 in Permian (TX). Horizontal gas rigs went down by -4 in Granite Wash (TX) and by -3 in Granite Wash (OK), while going up by +2 in Eagle Ford (TX) .....

EIA reported a +77 bcf injection for the week ended May 18 (Bloomberg median +78 bcf, Bloomberg Whisper +76 bcf). The 24 estimates submitted to Bloomberg varied from +70 bcf to +90 bcf with a standard deviation of 5 bcf. Our model showed +71 bcf. Average weather was warmer week on week (24 HDDs vs. 31 HDDs), but again a combination of higher temperatures in the north and lower temperatures in the south led to a decrease in cooling demand. Baker Hughes shows 1,982 active rigs as of May 18, 2012, up +12 from a week ago. Oil rigs went up by +10 (ht: +2, vt-dir: +8) and total gas rigs went up by +2 (ht: +4, vt-dir: -2). Horizontal oil rigs went up by +4 in Bakken (ND) and by +2 in Permian (NM), while going down by -3 in Anadarko (OK). Horizontal gas rigs went up by +6 in Eagle Ford (TX) and by +2 in Granite Wash (TX).

EIA reported a +61 bcf injection for the week ended May 11 (Bloomberg median +54 bcf, Bloomberg Whisper +58 bcf). The 23 estimates submitted to Bloomberg varied from +45 bcf to +67 bcf with a standard deviation of 6 bcf. Our model showed +54 bcf. Weather was warmer week on week (31 HDDs vs. 57 HDDs), but this time lower temperatures in the South and Southeast put a damp on cooling demand as total CDDs only managed to move higher by 1 CDD to 25 CDDs from 24 CDDs the prior week. The price of WTI plunged -9% from May 1 to reach $97.01 on May 8 while WTI non-commercial net length experienced the sharpest drop (since data is available) during the week ende.....
