STATS shows 1,859 active rigs as of November 4, 2011, up +4 rigs from a week ago. Oil rigs rose by +17 (ht: +12, vt-dir: +5) and gas rigs fell by -13 (ht: +6, vt-dir: -7).

U.S. crude oil inventories rose by +1.83m bbl in the week ending October 28, while Cushing stocks built +560k bbl. Distillate inventories declined by -3.6m bbl and gasoline inventories posted an increase of +1.4m bbl. Crude imports decreased by -419 kb/d.

We focus on net length of non-commercial traders as well as net length of money managers and swap dealers as indicated in the disaggregated data for WTI , natural gas, gasoline, and heating oil. Non-commercial net length climbed in WTI (for the third consecutive week) and gasoline, and was flat in heating oil during the week ended October 25. Non-commercials boosted .....

October 26, 2011 Cushing stocks built +419k bbl on the week, pulling the price of front-month WTI lower by approximately $1/bbl in the first 15 minutes of trading after the report. The number countered the expectation of a draw in Cushing that had emerged following Monday’s release of satellite-based data, which had contributed to the switch in the WTI futures curve from contango to backwardation.

October 19, 2011 Crude stocks declined by -4.7m bbl on the week, against the Bloomberg median expectation of +2.0m bbl. Cushing stocks gained for the second consecutive week, adding +0.47m bbl. Gasoline and distillate stocks both posted declines of -3.3m bbl and -4.3m bbl, respectively. Refinery runs dropped by -134 kb/d, led by a decline in PADD III .
