Commitment of Traders Report - March 9, 2012

Please find attached data and charts detailing the latest CFTC Commitments of Traders Report for the week ended March 6. We focus on net length of non-commercial traders as well as net length of money managers and swap dealers as indicated in the disaggregated data for WTI , natural gas, gasoline, and heating oil. The week ended March 6 experienced a decline in non-commercial net length in WTI for the first time since December 20. Non-commercials reduced net length in WTI by 26.7k to 28.....

PLEASE NOTE : Starting today, LCMC will also publish a rig report based on Baker Hughes data. The new report will have the identical breakdown as the Schlumberger (Smith) STATS to allow a direct comparison between the two data sets. U.S. Rig Watch – Baker Hughes will be published Fridays shortly after source data becomes available. STATS shows 1,903 active rigs as of March 9, 2012, up +30 rigs from a week ago. Oil rigs went up by +32 (ht: +10, vt-dir: +22) and total gas rigs fell b.....

EIA reported a -80 bcf withdrawal for the week ended March 2 (Bloomberg median -85 bcf, Bloomberg Whisper -86 bcf). The 26 estimates submitted to Bloomberg varied from -56 bcf to -92 bcf with a standard deviation of 7 bcf. Our pipeline scrape model showed -88 bcf. Weather was slightly cooler week on week (160 HDDs vs. 159 HDDs), however we also had 5 CDDs primarily in the South Central region rather than the Southeast. Compared to last year we had -19 less HDDs (160 HDDs vs. 179 HDDs). Tota.....

Please find attached data and charts detailing the latest CFTC Commitments of Traders Report for the week ended February 28. We focus on net length of non-commercial traders as well as net length of money managers and swap dealers as indicated in the disaggregated data for WTI , natural gas, gasoline, and heating oil. Non-commercials increased net length across the petroleum complex again during the week ended February 28. As news flow from Iran continued, non-commercial net length in WTI .....

Schlumberger (Smith) Rigs

STATS shows 1,873 active rigs as of March 2, 2012, up +17 rigs from a week ago. Oil rigs went up by +34 (ht: +24, vt-dir: +10) and total gas rigs fell by -17 (ht: -20, vt-dir: +3). Eagle Ford (TX) horizontal oil rigs went up by +9, while Monterey (CA) vertical/directional oil rigs went up by 5 and Permian (TX) vertical/directional oil rigs went up by +4. Marcellus ( NEPA ) lost the most horizontal gas rigs at -7, followed by Haynesville (LA) and Marcellus (WV) where horizontal gas rigs fell b.....

EIA reported a -82 bcf withdrawal for the week ended February 24 (Bloomberg median -90 bcf, Bloomberg Whisper -89 bcf). The 27 estimates submitted to Bloomberg varied from -74 bcf to -104 bcf with a standard deviation of 5 bcf. Our pipeline scrape model showed -91 bcf. Weather was warmer both week on week (159 HDDs vs. 203 HDDs) and year on year (159 HDDs vs. 178 HDDs). STATS shows 1,856 active rigs as of February 24, 2012, up +7 rigs from a week ago. Oil rigs went up by +11 (ht: +10, vt-dir: +1) and total gas rigs fell by -4 (ht: +1, vt-dir: -5). Eagle Ford (TX) gained 11 horizontal oil rigs and Anadarko (OK) gained another 3 horizontal oil rigs. Marcellus (WV) regained 5 horizontal gas rigs and Haynesville lost another 5 horizontal gas rigs.

The 24 estimates submitted to Bloomberg varied from -125 bcf to -185 bcf with a standard deviation of 15 bcf. Our pipeline scrape model showed -167 bcf.
