Baker Hughes shows 462 active rigs as of August 5, 2016, higher by +2 from the previous week. Oil rigs increased by +7 to 381 (ht: +8; vt-dir: -1), while gas-directed rigs decreased by -5 to 81 (ht: unch; vt-dir: -5). Horizontal oil rigs increased by +4 in Eagle Ford (TX) and by +3 in Permian (NM). Horizontal gas rigs increased by +1 in Haynesville (TX) while decreasing by -1 in Marcellus (WV).

The EIA reported a -6 bcf withdrawal for the week ending July 28, coming in below our own number of -3 bcf and the Bloomberg median at -2 bcf. At a regional level, we underestimated the build in the East and the draw in South Central. Our model was also slightly off in the Mountain region. In last week’s storage report, we highlighted the factors that could push today’s draw beyond modeled values. Total net imports for the reference week averaged 2.34 bcf/d, higher by +0.26 bcf/d week-on-week. During the same week last year, U.S. net imports averaged 2.27 bcf/d. Average natural gas demand in the power sector was 39.3 bcf/d, higher by +3.6 bcf/d week-over-week. We provide all Legacy and Disaggregated trader positions for natural gas, WTI , Brent, gasoline, heating oil and gasoil. Non-commercials increased net length in natural gas and heating oil , but decreased in Brent, gasoline, gasoil and WTI during the reference week. Non-commercials net length in natural gas increased by +8.8k to +154.5k in futures and grew by +6.1k .....

The EIA reported a +17 bcf injection for the week ending July 21, coming in below our own number of +25 bcf and the Bloomberg median at +26 bcf. At a regional level, South Central represented the largest miss. Today’s inventory build in the teens made us look back a decade – the last time natural gas markets recorded a July injection in the teens was the week ending July 28, 2006 (+19 bcf).
