Commitments of Traders Report – May 29, 2017

Please find attached data and charts detailing the latest CFTC Commitments of Traders Report for the week ended May 23. We provide all Legacy and Disaggregated trader positions for natural gas, WTI , Brent, gasoline, heating oil and gasoil. Non-commercials increased net length in Brent, gasoline, gasoil, heating oil and WTI , but decreased in natural gas during the reference week. Non-commercials net length in natural gas declined by -5.4k to +496.3k in futures and fell by -0.5k to +5.....

Baker Hughes shows 907 active rigs as of May 26, 2017, higher by +7 from the previous week. Oil rigs increased by +2 to 722 (ht: +5; vt-dir: -3), and gas-directed rigs increased by +5 to 185 (ht: +2; vt-dir: +3). Horizontal oil rigs increased by +2 in Permian (NM), by +1 in Permian (TX), by +1 in Bakken (ND) and by +1 in Anadarko (OK). Horizontal gas rigs increased by +1 in Eagle Ford (TX) and by +1 in Woodford (Arkoma).

The EIA reported a +75 bcf injection for the week ending May 18, +7 bcf above what our flow model had anticipated on Tuesday and +6 bcf above the Bloomberg median. The largest differences were observed in the South Central and East which saw 5 and 3 Bcf injections above our estimates, respectively. The miss in the South Central estimate is likely due in part to the record high receipts from the Northeast in the early part of the week, combined with lower than average deliveries to the Midwes.....

Please find attached data and charts detailing U.S. gas imports and power demand for the week ended May 18, 2017. Total net imports for the reference week averaged -0.62 bcf/d, lower by -0.41 bcf/d week-on-week. During the same week last year, U.S. net imports averaged 1.59 bcf/d. Average natural gas demand in the power sector was 24.0 bcf/d, higher by 1.9 bcf/d week-over-week. During the reference week, the contiguous US observed 37 population weighted CDDs, up 20 week over week.

Non-commercials increased net length in Brent, gasoline, natural gas, gasoil and heating oil , but decreased in WTI during the reference week. Non-commercials net length in natural gas increased by +57.0k to +501.7k in futures and rose by +60.5k to.....

Oil rigs increased by +8 to 720 (ht: +14; vt-dir: -6), and gas-directed rigs increased by +8 to 180 (ht: +3; vt-dir: +5). Horizontal oil rigs increased by +7 in Permian (TX), by +4 in Anadarko (OK), by +3 in Eagle Ford (TX) and by +1 in Barnett Combo (TX), while declining by -1 in Bakken (ND). Horizontal gas rigs increased by +1 each in Haynesville (LA), Haynesville (TX) and Marcellus ( SWPA ), and by +2.....

The EIA reported a +68 bcf injection for the week ending May 11, +5 bcf above what our flow model had anticipated on Tuesday and +6 bcf above the Bloomberg median. The largest differences were in the Midwest and Mountain which were +5 bcf and +3 bcf higher than our estimates, respectively. Our underestimation of the Midwest is likely due to an overemphasis on the impact of Vector pipeline outage during its second week of restrictions to Dawn and Eastern Michigan.
