In Focus: Petrochemical update Some of the key issues on the minds of chemical companies – or at least the analysts that cover them – include ethane and propane exports, construction timelines for new cracking facilities in the U.S. and opportunities for chemical demand growth in international markets, particularly China. If there was any bias in their analyses, it would be in categorically bullish stances on supply and mostly bearish outlooks for feedstock prices.

Please find attached data and charts detailing the latest CFTC Commitments of Traders Report for the week ended April 29. We provide all Legacy and Disaggregated trader positions for natural gas, WTI , Brent, gasoline and heating oil. Non-commercials increased net length in heating oil, Brent and gasoline , but decreased in natural gas and WTI during the reference week. Non-commercials net length in natural gas decreased by -24.7k to +384.7k in futures and fell by -18.2k to +515.6k in.....

Baker Hughes shows 1,850 active rigs as of May 2, 2014, lower by -7 from the previous week. Oil rigs decreased by -7 to 1,527 (ht: +3; vt-dir: -10) while the number of gas-directed rigs stayed the same at 323 (ht: -1; vt-dir: +1). Horizontal oil rigs decreased by -3 to 39 in Anadarko (TX). Gas-directed horizontal rigs decreased by -3 to 21 in Marcellus ( NEPA ).

CORRECTION - May 1, 2014

The original version stated the EIA reported an 82 bcf withdrawal this week. It was an injection and not withdrawal (underlined in the text). EIA reported an +82 bcf injection for the week ending April 25 (Bloomberg median +76 bcf, Bloomberg whisper: +78 bcf). The 24 estimates submitted to Bloomberg varied from +66 bcf to +88 bcf with a standard deviation of 5 bcf. Our model showed +73 bcf. Nationwide natural gas-weighted HDDs decreased by -13 to 73, while nationwide electricity-weighte.....

In Focus: Bluegrass, ATEX and new ethane ships As plans for domestic pipeline infrastructure continue to change, Northeast storage capacity could be challenged and regional ethane recovery could surprise to the downside. At the same time, with new multi-purpose LNG ships announced to target the ethane/ethylene trade, we have more confidence in additional U.S. ethane exports. Please find attached data and charts detailing the latest CFTC Commitments of Traders Report for the week ended April 22. We provide all Legacy and Disaggregated trader positions for natural gas, WTI , Brent, gasoline and heating oil. Non-commercials increased net length in natural gas, heating oil, Brent and gasoline, but decreased in WTI during the reference week. Non-commercials net length in natural gas grew by +5.0k to +409.4k in futures and increased by +14.3k to +533.8k in futu.....

Baker Hughes shows 1,857 active rigs as of April 25, 2014, higher by +31 from the previous week. Oil rigs increased by +24 to 1,534 (ht: +16; vt-dir: +8) while gas-directed rigs increased by +7 to 323 (ht: +5; vt-dir: +2). Horizontal oil rigs increased by +8 to 111 in Anadarko (OK) and vertical/directional oil rigs increased by +5 to 210 in the Permian (TX). Gas-directed horizontal rigs increased by +3 to 24 in Marcellus ( NEPA ).

EIA reported a +49 bcf withdrawal for the week ending April 18 (Bloomberg median +44 bcf, Bloomberg whisper: +45 bcf). The 22 estimates submitted to Bloomberg varied from +25 bcf to +56 bcf with a standard deviation of 8 bcf. Our model showed +46 bcf. Nationwide natural gas-weighted HDDs decreased by -13 to 86, while nationwide electricity-weighted cooling degree days reported by NOAA remained flat at 6 CDDs. In Focus: Ethane exports The announcement today from Enterprise that it intends to move forward with an ethane export terminal isn’t too much of a surprise – the partnership has been touting the fundamental length in the product for some time, and has indicated it would pursue such a project given sufficient commercial interest. The question remains, however, whether Enterprise has received firm commitments from international petrochemical producers. To make this a really credible investment.....
