Please find attached data and charts detailing the latest CFTC Commitments of Traders Report for the week ended December 20. We provide all Legacy and Disaggregated trader positions for natural gas, WTI , Brent, gasoline, heating oil and gasoil. Non-commercials increased net length in natural gas, gasoil and WTI , but decreased in Brent, gasoline and heating oil during the reference week. Baker Hughes shows 652 active rigs as of December 23, 2016, higher by +16 from the previous week. Oil rigs increased by +13 to 523 (ht: +12; vt-dir: +1), and gas-directed rigs increased by +3 to 129 (ht: +2; vt-dir: +1). Horizontal oil rigs increased by +5 in Anadarko (OK), +2 in Permian (TX), and by +1 in the Eagle Ford (TX). Horizontal gas rigs increased by +1 in Haynesville (TX), +2 in Marcellus ( SWPA ), -3 in Marcellus (WV) and +3 in areas not associated with named plays. Vertical/Direction.....

The EIA reported a -209 bcf withdrawal for the week ending December 15, a slightly larger draw than our estimate of -206 bcf and the Bloomberg median at -206 bcf. For the most part, today’s withdrawal suggests that last week’s -147 bcf was an outlier. There will be no commentary this week.

Total net imports for the reference week averaged +0.62 bcf/d, higher by +1.01 bcf/d week-on-week. During the same week last year, U.S. net imports averaged +1.28 bcf/d. Average natural gas demand in the power sector was 25.1 bcf/d, higher by +1.4 bcf/d week-over-week. The EIA reported a -147 bcf withdrawal for the week ending December 8, a dramatically larger draw than our estimate of -131 bcf and the Bloomberg median at -134 bcf. Today’s number caught us by surprise and our regional models provided erratic estimates in multiple regions. While “the return from the holiday effect” can present itself as a comforting thought, flow-based models should not have been as severely impacted by the holidays as observed this week.
