STATS shows 1,708 active rigs as of December 21, 2012, up +3 from the previous week. Oil rigs increased by +3 to 1,320 (ht: +13, vt-dir: -10) and total gas rigs were unchanged, although rig types shifted (ht: +6, vt-dir: -6). Horizontal oil rigs increased by +6 in the Eagle Ford (TX) and by +4 in the Permian (TX). STATS shows +2 horizontal gas rigs were added in the Northeast and +3 rigs in the Southwest portions of the Marcellus (PA). Baker Hughes shows 1,769 active rigs as of December 21,.....

EIA reported a -82 bcf withdrawal for the week ending December 14 (Bloomberg median -75 bcf, Bloomberg Whisper -76 bcf). The 21 estimates submitted to Bloomberg varied from -82 bcf to -57 bcf with a standard deviation of 6 bcf. Our model showed -74 bcf. Nationwide HDDs jumped to 160 from 114 in the prior week. STATS shows 1,705 active rigs as of December 14, 2012, down -26 rigs from a week ago. Oil rigs decreased by -24 (ht: -29, vt-dir: +5.) and total gas rigs decreased by -2 (ht: unch, vt-dir: -2). Horizontal oil rigs decreased by -12 in Eagle Ford (TX) and by -7 in Permian (NM). On the gas side, horizontal rigs in Eagle Ford (TX) dropped by -4.
