The EIA reported a -152 bcf withdrawal for the week ending February 2, in line with our estimate of -153 bcf and the Bloomberg median at -152 bcf. Today’s number included a reclassification of 5 bcf from working gas to base gas in the Pacific region, bringing the implied flows out of storage to -147 bcf. Please note our extended U.S. and Canada tables covering the withdrawal season are included in the attachment.

Total net imports for the reference week averaged -0.43 bcf/d, higher by +0.12 bcf/d week-on-week. During the same week last year, U.S. net imports averaged +1.82 bcf/d. Average natural gas demand in the power sector was 21.2 bcf/d, higher by +1.0 bcf/d week-over-week. Oil rigs increased by +17 to 583 (ht: +16; vt-dir: +1), and gas-directed rigs was unchanged from 145 (ht: +1; vt-dir: -1). The EIA reported a -87 bcf withdrawal for the week ending January 26, in line with our estimate of -87 bcf and the Bloomberg median at -87 bcf. Yet, our victory lap was cut short by the regional breakdown. Once again, our models missed the Midwest and South Central inventory changes by a wide margin, overestimating Midwest draws and underestimating South Central call on storage.
